Finding accommodation in Amsterdam without spending a lot is challenging. The capital of the Netherlands is not a cheap destination, especially when it comes to finding a place to stay. With the recent growth in tourism, local authorities aim to increase hotel prices to prevent a tourism invasion. They intend to avoid tourism inflating property prices meant for actual residents and to make the most out of their visitors. We will tell you about the best areas and hotels to stay in Amsterdam.

1. The City Center: The Most Convenient Area to Stay in Amsterdam

If you want your stay in Amsterdam to be as convenient as possible, we definitely recommend staying in the city center. The Centrum has the largest hotel offer in the city, although it is quite difficult to find well-priced hotels in this area. Staying here will make your visit to the city much easier: you will have most attractions just a stone’s throw away, and you will be very close to Central Station, which will connect you with other Dutch and European cities.

As mentioned, in addition to housing the world-famous canal belt, the center of Amsterdam is full of attractions such as the Royal Palace, several museums, leisure areas, and beautiful squares. It will also allow you to explore the city on foot. If you are looking for a comfortable stay in every sense, the city center is the best area to stay in Amsterdam.

Our recommendations in the center of Amsterdam:

  • Park Plaza Victoria Amsterdam
  • Monet Garden Hotel Amsterdam
  • ibis Amsterdam Centre

2. Jordaan: One of the Most Charming Areas to Stay in Amsterdam

It’s important to note that Amsterdam’s Centrum area encompasses up to 10 historic neighborhoods. Perhaps the most well-known is the Red Light District, but we fell in love with Jordaan. This labyrinthine neighborhood of attractive narrow streets and canals is full of surprises: from its authentic boutiques to its interesting art galleries. Historically, Jordaan has been a working-class neighborhood, but today it has become a sort of enclave for artists and designers, making it an ideal place to stay in Amsterdam.

The positive aspect is that Jordaan is a beautiful and quiet neighborhood, much more authentic than other areas in the center of Amsterdam. However, the downside is that there are few hotels and it is considered an expensive area to stay in Amsterdam. Nevertheless, if you have the budget, we recommend it. You won’t regret it.

Good accommodations in Jordaan:

  • Hotel Mercier
  • Hotel Fossa
  • Mr. Jordaan

3. Oud Zuid: One of the Smartest Areas to Stay in Amsterdam

If you can’t find a hotel in the center, don’t worry. You will find better deals in the surrounding areas, especially in Oud Zuid. If you choose this neighborhood, you will have opted for one of the smartest areas to stay in Amsterdam. We especially recommend the Museum Quarter area. There you will find some of the best value-for-money hotels in Amsterdam.

Why this area? Because it houses three very important museums: the Van Gogh Museum, the Rijksmuseum, and the Stedelijk Museum. Additionally, it is perfectly connected to the center by tram.

Oud Zuid is a quiet residential area to stay in Amsterdam. You can see grand mansions and enjoy its magnificent green spaces like Vondelpark. If you love fashion, Oud Zuid will not disappoint. You can explore high-end shopping streets like PC Hoofstraat. Regarding the price, if you book in advance, you can find hotels for around €90 per night, although it is always challenging to stay in Amsterdam for a lower price.

The best hotels in Oud Zuid:

  • Hotel Cornelisz
  • Hotel Atlas Vondelpark
  • NH Amsterdam Museum Quarter

4. Oud West: A Cool and Convenient Area

This is another neighborhood surrounding Amsterdam’s historic center. So if it surrounds it, it means it’s well located! It’s a vibrant neighborhood with many trendy restaurants and bars. As you can imagine, it’s much quieter than the city center and you can find more affordable options. The neighborhood boasts some really beautiful streets, especially the area near Vondelpark. There you will find incredible 19th-century houses.

If you want to walk to the center (which we advise), it shouldn’t take you more than 30 minutes. In terms of price, you can find good hotels for around €90 per night.

We recommend these hotels in Oud West:

  • The ED Amsterdam
  • Larende
  • Hotel van de Vijsel

5. Oost: An Economical Option

If you’re looking for good and affordable hotels in Amsterdam, you will find some in the residential area of Oost. It doesn’t have tourist attractions, but it does offer accommodations that will allow you to stay without spending too much. As the name suggests, this neighborhood is located on the east side of the city, quite far from the center of Amsterdam. However, during peak season, if you want to find hotels for around €100 per night, looking in this area might save you. In the low season, it’s easy to find rooms for €80.

The neighborhood is full of 19th-century buildings and several green areas, and it’s known for its bustling markets and great cultural diversity. In Oost, you will find restaurants with very diverse cuisines, a wide variety of local shops, and interesting terraces. As for the location, it will take you about an hour to walk to the city center, but only about 20 minutes by tram. Without a doubt, one of the best areas to stay cheaply in Amsterdam.

Recommended accommodations in Oost:

  • Stayokay Hostel Amsterdam Oost
  • The Manor Amsterdam
  • Volkshotel

Choosing the right place to stay in Amsterdam depends largely on your preferences and budget. The city offers a diverse range of neighborhoods, each with its own unique charm and advantages.

  • If convenience and proximity to major attractions are your priorities, the city center (Centrum) is the best choice, despite the higher prices.
  • For a more authentic and charming experience, consider staying in the Jordaan neighborhood.
  • If you are looking for a balance between quality and cost, Oud Zuid near the Museum Quarter is a smart option.
  • Oud West offers a vibrant atmosphere with trendy spots and is conveniently located close to the center.
  • For budget-conscious travelers, Oost provides affordable accommodations without compromising on the Amsterdam experience.

By understanding what each area offers, you can make an informed decision that will enhance your visit to this beautiful and dynamic city. No matter where you choose to stay, Amsterdam’s efficient public transportation system ensures that you are never too far from its numerous attractions and vibrant culture. Enjoy your stay in Amsterdam!
